English IV Second Six Weeks Syllabus

The second six weeks syllabus will contain the following:
Writing
The student
will:
Continue
the journal as a springboard for thematic ideas.
Continue
journal entries to effectively practice usage, grammar, and mechanics skills.
Employ
multi-paragraph essay skills.
Demonstrate
knowledge of the five step writing process.
The student
will produce a four-paragraph essay.
Vocabulary
The student will:
Acquire an
extensive vocabulary through reading and systematic word study.
Ten
vocabulary or "Hot Words" are assigned the first day of each week.
Students
are exposed to the Hot Words throughout the week in journal entries, reading assignments,
and class discussions.
Students
are quizzed over the week's ten Hot Words in a quiz at the end of each week that uses the
words in a variety of contexts.
Students
are tested over the definitions of two weeks' worth of words.
Reading
The student will:
Comprehend
selections using a variety of strategies.
The student
reads extensively and intensively for different purposes in varied sources in increasingly
demanding texts.
Students will be evaluated through
quizzes and tests for comprehension and interpretation.
The student
reads widely to increase knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the
common elements across culture.
Reading includes mythology and the epic, Antigone.
Read,
outside of class and approximately forty-five minutes of assigned class time, selections
of personal choice.
Students will be evaluated at the end of
each six weeks period in a book conference with the instructor.
