English IV First Six Weeks Syllabus

The first six weeks syllabus will contain the following:
Writing
The student will:
Create a
journal for the daily chronicling of assigned topics or student generated topics.
Journal writing occurs daily during the
first ten minutes of class.
Journals remain in the assigned box in
the classroom at all times.
Journal entries are randomly graded.
Review the
multi-paragraph format.
The student will learn the
multi-paragraph terminology.
The student will be quizzed and tested on
terminology.
The student will practice using each
component of the multi-paragraph format.
The student will share his practice
components with peer writers.
The student will respond to others'
writing.
Effectively
demonstrate an understanding of standard English usage, grammar, and mechanics rules.
Vocabulary
The student will:
Acquire an
extensive vocabulary through reading and systematic word study.
Ten
vocabulary or "Hot Words" are assigned the first day of each week.
Students
are exposed to the Hot Words throughout the week in journal entries, reading assignment,
and class discussions.
Students
are quizzed over the week's ten Hot Words in a quiz at the end of each week that uses the
words in a variety of contexts.
Students
are tested over the definitions of two weeks' worth of words.
Reading
The student will:
Comprehend
selections using a variety of strategies.
Student will be evaluated through quizzes
and tests for comprehension and interpretation.
Students will evaluate modern allusions
to ancient world literature.
The student
reads extensively and intensively for different purposes in varied sources in increasingly
demanding texts.
Reading includes Greek and Roman
mythology
The student
reads widely to increase knowledge of his/her own culture, the culture of others, and the
common elements across culture.
Reading includes mythology and the epics,
Iliad and Aeneid.
Reading
outside of class and approximately forty-five minutes of assigned class time, selections
of personal choice.
Students will be evaluated at the end of
each six weeks period in a book conference with the instructor.
