3. New Year Issues Poster for your Classroom - Please go over with Students

  • Short Names - No spaces or dashes for folders or filenames:

  • Just a NOTE: Please let me add one more rule to anything you plan to put on the Web.

The file name needs to be SHORT and without SPACES or special characters. Sooooooo instead of saving a file and uploading it called:

    Arp Elementary Calender for 2009-10.doc

you need to shorten that to

    ElemCal_9_10.doc

The underscore _  is OK but the dash – is NOT OK. We use the underscore instead of spaces. Keep the name as short as possible….this is very important for all documents you create as the longer the file name the more space it takes up on the disk directory (hard drive or server) AND in the case of the WEB, the less likely it will be for you to give someone the correct address of its location.

This is what a URL looks like that has spaces in it.  http://www.arp.sprnet.org/Elem%20Calendar%202009-10.htm  Spaces are replaced by %20  in the Web address…this is done automatically…and that looks really nasty to someone wanting to type in that address into their browser.
