Colours Listing

Note: This page was first created using Netscape 3.0bx to define the 256 colours. Microsoft, at that time, supported 16 colours. Microsoft 4.0b1 appears to recognize all 256 colours but I can find no documentation to support it.

This page is made up from a wide range of information sources. Notice that the colour names and the hex values do not always produce corresponding colours. These values came from Netscape. However, MSIE and W3C have also gotten on the bandwagon and released their own colour endorsements.

The chart below shows the colours in two pairs: in the left column the color is set using the alpha colour name; and the right column uses the hexadecimal value.

Each colour carries the logos of the organization(s) supporting it.

This table does not always display correctly. It is best viewed on an 800x600 screen in 256 colours.

Note: If you need more information about colours, I highly recommend this explanation of colour by: Gernot Metze. He includes six hex colour charts that provide most of the usable WWW colours. Go to the bottom of the page for the colour charts. The top of the page is an excellent background on colour and its use. Denis Wieger's page examines colour as it is used by different types of computers and addresses the Mac/PC colour compatibility question. This question of different platforms and their presentation of colour are addressed by W3C in their document "A Standard Default color Space for the Internet". Detailed explanations and more links are available at that site.

Netscape in its 3.0bx documentation specifies "aliceblue" as "#f0f8ff". WebTV defines the same "aliceblue" as "#a0ce00". Take your pick.

The WebTV 1.2 specification is used in this chart. WebTV in its "HTML Color Names" document gives two spellings for colours containing the word "grey". For example, "darkgray" and "darkgrey". Both are presented here. Please note not all browsers support "grey", only "gray".

Microsoft Internet Explorer recognized only 16 colours with its MSIE 3.x revision. The MSIE 4.x recognized all colours documented in its HTMLHelp.exe help file version 4.00.

Netscape uses the following colours for their links:
Normal Text = #000000 Unvisited Link = #0000ff Visited Link = #660099 Active Link = #ff0000 Background = #cccccc
WebTV uses the following colours:
Normal Text = #000000 Unvisited Link = #2222bb Visited Link = #8822bb Active Link = not supported Background = #c6c6c6
