Update SB 103
SB 103 requires the expansion of Texas' student assessment program to include
the following:

- Moving the EXIT level to grade 11 (English III & Writing, Math
(Algebra I & Geometry), Science (IPC & Biology) & Social Studies
(U.S. History)
- Elimination of End-of-Course Exams
- Math assessments in grades 3 through 11
- Reading assessment in grades 3 through 9
- Writing assessment assessment in grades 4 through seven
- English Language Arts in grades 10 and 11
- Social Studies in grades 8, 10, and 11
- Science in grades 5, 10, 11
The new test will be aligned with the new Learner-Centered (Constructivism)
TEKS and new textbooks. The commissioner must implemented these changes no
later than the 2002-2003 school year.
Change Requirements:
- Ninth-grade students must be assessed in reading and mathematics
- The current 10th-grade test must be expanded to include science and social
studies
- The eighth-grade writing assessment must be moved to the seventh grade
- The eighth-grade science test must be eliminated
- A science test must be administered to the fifth grade
