DESIGN RUBRIC 

for the Super Highway

  • General Guidelines
    • Determine and stay focused on the content
    • Title and date all pages
    • Use a consistent look throughout -- select consistent theme for pages (buttons, background, color scheme)
    • Place important information on the opening screen
    • Develop clear and logical navigation
    • Differentiate information and subtopics
    • State purpose, audience, and scope of project
    • Provide project rubric
    • Use a site map or index
  • Graphics
    • Store locally and limit size
    • Use only relevant images
    • Use interlaced graphics when possible
    • Provide charts, graphs, and graphical data when appropriate
  • Body Content
    • Use generous white space
    • Title each section heading
    • Use appropriate bullets (beginning with action verbs)
    • Use technical writing techniques
    • Use research skills
    • Comply with ethical & copyright issues 
    • Develop a resource page
    • Use standard fonts and sizes
    • Include an e-mail address 
  • Purpose
    • Provide current, updated information appropriate for intended audience
    • Provide for comments & formative evaluations 
    • Provide for participation & interactivity - "growing the global database"
    • Provide concise, provable, and adequately researched content
  • Hypertext Linking
    • Use relative links to documents and images
    • Use descriptive words for text links
    • Include a link to the Home Page (no dead ends)
    • Keep navigation links similar in appearance and location
  • Page Size and Length
    • Design for the default page size
    • Keep pages to 2 -3 screens
    • Include a means to give feedback
    • Keep loading time to less than 15 seconds for MODEM users
  • Digital Audio and Video
    • Use only where appropriate
    • Store multimedia in standard formats
    • Keep files as small as possible
  • Collaboration
    • Include online collaboration opportunities
    • Provide links to experts and enrichment resources
    • Provide for evaluation and input from peers, experts, and global community
  • Field Test
    • Generate data from evaluations
    • Keep updated
    • Elicit peer and expert assessment
