Control of Audio sound and dubbing

 
Sound is the most difficult component to control.  A variety of microphones (directional & focused, wireless & lapel) are necessary to capture good background and ambient sound, speakers' voices, and for dubbing in post production.  
Audio Cables

Know the limitations of each cable.  XLR (3-prong) cables maintain decent signals even in long lengths (20', 30', 60', ect.) However, a 1/4" cable  should not be more than 10'.

Know whether your application (camera, mixer, recorder) requires stereo or mono connections
